Meet Meredith ~ Boxed in The Bush

Meet Meredith ~ Boxed in The Bush

Tell us about your business and how it started?

Boxed in the Bush is a subscription gift parcel for women who enjoy knowing the story under the wrapping. It is stocked only by women with rural and regional businesses. The lightbulb lit for me during a 3am breastfeeding marathon with my third daughter - I was scrolling through the @buyfromthebush Instagram feed and thinking, 'Why can't someone just pick me a box of goodies so I don't have to make a decision?'. The next day I was listening to a podcast about subscription boxes and realised there was no reason why that "someone" couldn't be me.

What challenges or hurdles have your faced in business?

First would be balancing mum life with building a business. I feel like there is so much to learn when growing a business (building a website, growing a following organically, etc) and then I've got these three girls who deserve so much love and attention. I don't want to use having a business or being a mum as the reason for not meeting the goals I set myself.

The second would be making time to learn all the things I feel like I should know for example, e-commerce is all new to me.

What impact has COVID had on your business and how have your changed your direction?

I began my business during the height of COVID-19 so I haven't felt any impacts, however I have witnessed an increased awareness of the need to support and buy from local businesses.

Buying from Australian businesses is something I'm very passionate about and I'm grateful for the shift people are experiencing.

What do you love about your service?

I love being able to shop meaningfully and sharing that with women who appreciate doing the same. I believe knowing the woman who produced a gift (how she lives, what her dreams and challenges are) make your purchases special in that you know what you are supporting and where your hard-earned money has ended up. You can't get that in a franchised shopping experience.

What are you currently reading, watching or listening to?

I will read just about any style of fiction - westerns, romance and young adult fantasy, you name it. I enjoy podcasts in the car when the kids allow it - anything parenting or business.

Who are your biggest cheerleaders?

My husband, Levi, and girlfriends Hayley and Jesse - they allow me to endlessly poll them on things they'd like to see in parcels and listen to me chatter on about what tech challenges/vision blocks I'm working through.

What do you love most about where you live?

Bowen is the first town we've lived in since having children where I've felt part of the community and I appreciate it dearly. I love being able to walk up the street and know the people you pass. The amazing beaches are a bonus as well.
